2006 WHSDC January Warm-Up
Houston Practice Speech & Debate
Tournament
Tournament Information
DATE: January 19-21, 2006
LOCATION: ChristChurch Baptist Fellowship, 12501
Champion Forest Drive, Houston, Texas, 77066. www.christchurchbaptist.org.
PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY: The January Warm-Up is a
practice tournament and any student preparing for NCFCA competition is welcome
to participate. A novice debate track and junior speech track will also be run.
NCFCA rules will be followed as closely as possible.
NOVICE & JUNIOR DIVISION: The novice debate division is
offered for team policy debaters where both partners are age 14 and below. A
novice debate division is not offered for LD debate. Just check the novice box
on your registration form.
The
junior speech division is for beginning speakers age 12 and below. A 12-year-old
student may not compete in both speech divisions at the same tournament. The
events offered will be generally run with NCFCA rules but with a 5-minute
maximum time limit. There will be no mandatory penalties in rank for junior
speech events.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURE: Registration for this tournament
is completed via e-mail (houstondebates@gmail.com)
AND snail mail (to Russell Strack, 36102 Post Oak Circle, Magnolia, TX
77355). A complete registration
will include (1) an e-mail with the completed event and food registration
forms, (2) the appropriate payment (check made out to WHSDC) and (3) a hard
copy of the completed and signed event and food registration form mailed with
the payment by January 9th.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: All registrations postmarked by January 9th will
be accepted as on time registrations. Registrations postmarked after that
date must include a $10 late fee (per student) and may be accepted (on an as
available basis only). To avoid problems
with your registration, please follow the above three steps by January 9th.
Refunds
will only be issued for extenuating circumstances. Don’t register if your
participation is uncertain. A family’s e-mail registration is their commitment
to pay the registration fee, even if they do not attend the tournament.
DRESS CODE: The spirit of the dress code is modesty and professionalism with the intent to glorify Christ. The goal is to minimize the focus on the body or outward appearance and maximize the focus on the development of ideas and communication skills. Competitors must be professional, clean and well-groomed. Gentlemen shall wear suits or sport coats and ties. Ladies shall wear either dresses, skirts, or suits. Hemlines shall fall to at least the bottom of the knee.
AWARDS CEREMONY: The awards ceremony is an important part of the tournament and is intended to be an encouraging and respectful ceremony to celebrate every student’s achievement during the tournament. Students accepting awards will be required to adhere to the dress code, and students in the audience are encouraged to remain in dress code out of respect for the students receiving awards.
CHAPERONES: All competitors under age 18 must be accompanied and supervised by a
parent, legal guardian, or adult chaperone throughout the entire tournament. An
adult chaperone (other than a parent) accepts full responsibility in the parent’s
absence and should be in possession of a signed medical release for each
student.
FOOD REGISTRATION: The food registration form should be included with the participant registration form.
JUDGE COMMITMENT:
A tremendous amount of volunteer effort is required to host and run a speech
and debate tournament. One of the things each family can do to help the
tournament run on time is by providing judges (either helping recruit community
judges or parent/coach judges). Each debate team is requested to provide a
judge for at least two rounds. IE competitors are asked to provide a judge for
each event in which they compete.
TIMERS: Each debate team should bring a timepiece to the tournament. Debate clubs may bring timepieces labeled for their club directly to the Timer Table on Thursday morning.
Responsible younger students (especially siblings) and adults viewing rounds are encouraged to participate in the tournament by serving as timekeepers. Please check in at the Timer Table 15 to 30 minutes before the round begins to get your timing assignment.
NCFCA RULES: Complete
league rules may be found at www.NCFCA.org.
