NCFCA Qualifying Speech and Debate
Tournament
Tournament Information
DATE: January 10-12, 2008
LOCATION:
PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY: The Houston January Warm-Up is
an NCFCA Qualifying Tournament open to all NCFCA Affiliates in Region IV. NCFCA
Affiliation is required prior to registration for this Qualifying Tournament. Each
family is responsible for reviewing the NCFCA rules to verify eligibility.
SPEECH and DEBATE EVENTS: Debate students must choose to
compete in either Team Policy Debate (TP) or Lincoln Douglas Values Debate
(LD). TP and LD run concurrently in the schedule, so participation in both is
not possible. Students may participate in a maximum of five Individual Speech
Events at this tournament.
JUNIOR SPEECH DIVISION: A Junior Speech Division for
beginning speakers age 12 and below will be offered alongside the Qualifying
Tournament on Friday. A 12-year-old student may not compete in both speech
divisions at the same tournament. The events (Oratory, Interpretive, and
Impromptu) offered will be generally run with NCFCA rules but with a 5-minute
maximum time limit. NCFCA Affiliation is not required for Junior participants.
There will be no mandatory penalties in rank for Junior Speech events.
Due to
tournament resource constraints, each Junior speech event costs $8, and
participation may need to be limited. Please number your Junior speech events
in order of preference in case the participation needs to be limited.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURE: Registration for this tournament
is completed via e-mail (houstondebates@gmail.com)
AND snail mail (to Joy Larimer,
The
registration list will be posted to the tournament website as soon as possible
after the tournament registration deadline.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: All registrations postmarked by January 2nd will
be accepted as on time registrations. Registrations postmarked after that
date must include a $25 late fee (per student) and may be accepted on an as
available basis only. To avoid problems
with your registration, please follow the above three steps by January 2nd.
Refunds
will only be issued for extenuating circumstances. Don’t register if your
participation is uncertain. A family’s e-mail registration is their commitment
to pay the entire registration fee, even if they do not attend the tournament.
DRESS CODE: The spirit of the dress code is modesty and professionalism with the intent to glorify Christ. The goal is to minimize the focus on the body or outward appearance and maximize the focus on the development of ideas and communication skills. Competitors must be professional, clean and well-groomed. Gentlemen shall wear suits or sport coats and ties. Ladies shall wear dresses, skirts, or suits. Hemlines shall fall to at least the bottom of the knee.
AWARDS CEREMONY: The awards ceremony is an important part of the tournament and is intended to be an encouraging and respectful ceremony to celebrate every student’s achievement during the tournament. Students accepting awards will be required to adhere to the dress code, and students in the audience are encouraged to remain in dress code out of respect for the students receiving awards.
CHAPERONES: All competitors under age 18 must be accompanied and supervised by a
parent, legal guardian, or adult chaperone throughout the entire tournament. An
adult chaperone (other than a parent) accepts full responsibility in the
parent’s absence and should be in possession of a signed medical release for
each student.
FOOD REGISTRATION: The food registration form should be included with the participant registration form.
JUDGE COMMITMENT:
A tremendous amount of volunteer effort is required to host and run a speech
and debate tournament. One of the things each family can do to help the
tournament run on time is by providing judges (either helping recruit community
judges or parent/coach judges). Each debate team is requested to provide a
judge for at least two rounds. IE competitors are asked to provide a round of judging
for each event in which they compete.
TIMERS: Each debate team should bring a timepiece to the tournament. Debate clubs may bring timepieces labeled for their club directly to the Timer Table on Thursday morning.
Responsible younger students (especially siblings) and adults viewing rounds are encouraged to participate in the tournament by serving as timekeepers. Please check in at the Timer Table 15 to 30 minutes before the round begins to get your timing assignment.
SCRIPT SUBMISSION: Script submissions are required at this NCFCA Qualifying Tournament. Please download the form from NCFCA (www.NCFCA.org on the speech page). Print out one submission form for each of your events, excluding limited prep. Be prepared to turn in your speeches when you check in at the tournament.
NCFCA RULES: Complete
league rules may be found at www.NCFCA.org.
NCFCA league rules and policies will prevail in any conflict with this
registration form.
